Turbulent Sixtes essays
Turbulent Sixtes essays Throughout American history, each generation has sought to individualize itself from all others preceding it. Decades of American history can be separated to represent a distinctive set of values, culture, and political ideals. The 1960's was a decade caught between euphoric, idealistic beginnings and a discordant, violent climax. The music of this time period produced a strong counterculture which sought to influence America in a way never before experienced. The songs were the backbone of this new age; they were the tunes which the generation danced to, marched to, and got high off of. This paper will discuss the ways popular music of the 1960's produced national awareness of the anti-war movements, led to the partialcollapse of the structure of American society, and forever changed the way current generations listen to and buy music. The songwriters of the 1960's were rarely without inspiration. Perhaps the most powerful incentive came from the movement to end the Vietnam War. Many of the most prominent musicians of that generation aided the struggle to protest against and attempt to end the war. The most popular song to be considered an anthem against the war efforts was called "Blowin' in the Wind," written by Bob Dylan in 1962 while he was living in New York. The song is centered around racism and militarism, two main focal points which were principal in many early sixties protest songs. Dylan used conventional symbols to blatantly state his point; a white dove representing peace, flying cannon balls describing war and violence, and roads and seas symbolizing the hardships and struggles there would have to be with eliminating the war. Demonstrations against the Vietnam War took place in many major cities and college campuses. While many of these demonstrations had only peaceful motives, violent methods were often used to break them up. Take for example the famous student takeover of Columbia University. Black students ar...

How to Structure Modern Marketing Departments For Success
How to Structure Modern Marketing Departments For Success Could an outdated marketing department structure hold you back from success? Itââ¬â¢s certainly possible. This industry moves fast. In order to keep up, you need the right people, with the right skills, doing the right tasks. If silos prevent your team from doing its best work, you could wind up spinning your wheels, without realizing why youââ¬â¢re not moving forward. Unfortunately, many organizations are unprepared to adapt to future changes. Leaders will staff talent skilled in emerging technologies and tactics, while followers with catch up too late (if at all). If your business is going to thrive, both today and in the future, itââ¬â¢s imperative your org chart is built to scale. So, how can you make sure your company is built for the future of marketing? Start planning now to determine: What skills will you need (and who has those skills)? How will you organize your team for maximum efficiency and success? What tools and software do you need to keep everyone in sync? This post will help answer those questions (and more). How to Structure Modern Marketing Departments For Success via @Snag Your Free Marketing Org Chart Template Itââ¬â¢s easier to achieve success when you can visualize it. With so many competing priorities vying for your attention, what makes this so important? The answer is simple: well-organized teams are better positioned to succeed than ones that aren't. But, getting it right isn't easy. What if you have the right people on the wrong team? Or lack the right teams to support the right people? Or the right people canââ¬â¢t communicate because of a communication barrier between teams? ^^^ If any of the above scenarios is true for your organization, youââ¬â¢re shortchanging your success. Fortunately, correcting these issues can have an outsized impact on future success. Not only that, but getting on the track is within your reach. A good team structure can have an outsized impact on future success. What Do Common Marketing Team Structures Look Like? Thereââ¬â¢s no such thing as an ideal one-size-fits-all team structure. Different models may work better for different organizations and industries. The size of your company overall plays an impact, too. If youââ¬â¢ve spent much time searching for examples to follow, odds are youââ¬â¢ve felt overwhelmed, too. Itââ¬â¢s not uncommon to hear advice suggesting you need a dozen roles for one team, and multiple teams spread across your entire marketing department. That might make sense for large enterprises with tons of resources. But, for the majority of companies, that may not be realistic. To simplify things, here are some theoretical examples for companies of different sizes. Small Business Marketing Team Structure: Lean and Scrappy. In a small business, odds are youââ¬â¢re hiring one or two people to tackle marketing. If youââ¬â¢re fortunate, you may have three or more. When available talent is this thin, how do you prioritize what these folks should be doing? Content Creation: Your marketer(s) will need to be able to update website content, write blog posts, and craft catchy copy for social media and email. Graphic Design: At a minimum, a working knowledge of Photoshop (or, failing that, free design apps like Canva) will be necessary. Technical Skills: A basic grasp of SEO is likely essential. A general ability to use a content management system (like WordPress) will be useful, too. Social Media Management: This can easily consume tons of time. (Scheduling tools can help). Project Management: How will you keep everything on track? This is just a handful of the different tasks they might be responsible for. What could this look like when its mapped out? Mid-Level Marketing Team Structure: Building for Growth. At this point, your marketing department may have multiple teams. Enterprise Marketing Team Structure: Specialists With Deep Expertise. Large companies (those with 200+ employees) may have more layers of management, with more specialized teams with deep expertise in specific areas. Hereââ¬â¢s a generic example: Take a Look at Example Marketing Org Charts (Courtesy of HubSpot) So far, this post has looked a few general examples. HubSpot did an excellent job breaking down seven common org structuresà (along with their respective pros and cons), getting a bit more granular into each one. Functional Org Chart This example is broken down across business functions. One can assume each spoke under Marketing leads down to more sub-teams (content, social, analytics, and so forth). Itââ¬â¢s also interesting to note how marketing and sales operate side-by-side (after all, someone has to close deals on the leads marketing generates). Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams How can you construct a functional marketing org chart?Divisional Org Chart In this next example, the company is organized based on product-category departments. Each department could presumably have its own marketing team. This type of structure is common at large enterprises that make lots of different types of products. For example, consider a company like Samsung, which produces everything from phones to refrigerators. Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams How can you construct a marketing team structure based on clear divisions?Market-Based Org Chart This example is similar to the previous one, except teams are split up based on customer-centric divisions instead of product-based ones. Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams How can marketing teams be organized around specific marketing segments?Geographical Org Chart For extremely large enterprises or companies with offices around the world, a geographic org chart like this one may make sense. A company with different geographic-based teams within a country might use something similar as well. Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams Is your marketing org chart based on geography and location?Process-Based Org Chart Next up is a process-based structure, where teams are divided up based on where they fit in the production of a product, from ideation all the way through to customer service. In this example, however, itââ¬â¢s unclear exactly where marketing may fit (though content can certainly support all initiatives shown). Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams How can marketing leaders develop process-based org charts?Matrix Org Chart If this one reminds you of a certain early 2000s movie series, youââ¬â¢re not alone. This example illustrates a different kind of matrix though. Itââ¬â¢s similar to some of the examples above, but instead of different divisions having their own marketing teams, the marketing, sales, and service functions all answer to one department head. From there, smaller sub-teams work with each division. Itââ¬â¢s a subtle but important distinction. Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams Here's how to plan a matrix-based marketing org structureCircular Org Chart In a circular organizational structure, a marketing services department responds to work requests from other areas. Source: https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/team-structure-diagrams Have you tried using a circular marketing org structure?Team-Based Org Charts Next, letââ¬â¢s look at what individual teams could look like when mapped out. Content Marketing Team You donââ¬â¢t need an enormous team to start content marketing. But, the work requires lots of different tactics and disciplines, and the more help you have, the better. What can this type of team look like at a large organization? Hereââ¬â¢s an example from Hubspot, a company that certainly knows how to do content marketing, via Revenify: Source: revenify.com/decide-structure-content-marketing-team-marketing-organization/ Social Media Team Seem a little complex? This example from Weber Shandwick takes a more high-level view: Source: http://webershandwickseattle.com/2012/11/a-crash-course-on-social-content-planning/social-content-team-structure-3/ Origin offers another way of looking at your social media team, introducing an analyst role: Source: https://www.originoutside.com/insights/what-should-your-social-media-team-look-like Public Relations Team Itââ¬â¢s easy to think of PR as nothing more than media relations (which is a complex discipline unto itself). But, this would be a misnomer. Modern public relations is multi-faceted and spans lots of areas, as this illustration of the PESO model from Spin Sucks illustrates: Source: https://spinsucks.com/marketing/peso-model-affiliate-marketing/ What does your PR team org chart look like?Following this diagram, several staffers would likely divide up work across paid, earned, shared, and owned media strategies. The diagram below from MMIà breaks down in a bit more detail how a team might be structured: Inbound Marketing Team Now, what about holistic inbound teams that bring paid and organic strategies together under one roof? Hereââ¬â¢s how Mojo Media Labsà breaks it down: Planning an inbound marketing team org chart? Read this first.SEO Team Search engine optimization is interesting because it often spans several teams across an organization. BuiltVisibleà breaks down four different areas a single SEO team needs to cover: technical SEO, content, outreach and off-site SEO (links), and analytics. Source: https://builtvisible.com/build-a-great-seo-team/ How should SEO teams be structured? What makes this intriguing? The technical aspects may require assistance from a development team. Content might be created by a content team or a separate marketing department (although SEO should be aligned with marketing). A PR team or specialist might help with link acquisition and other off-site strategies (even if the terms a link builder and a PR pro use may differ according to their goals). Analysts often measure all aspects of a companyââ¬â¢s marketing efforts. So, while this may look like a simple diagram, but thereââ¬â¢s more than meets the eye. Whatââ¬â¢s the Problem With Following Someone Elseââ¬â¢s Org Chart? Itââ¬â¢s easier to know what to do, when you have a good example to follow. But, when it comes to organizing your marketing department, you have to do what makes the most sense for your company. That may or may not entail following a template down to a T. Collectively, the examples above illustrate one overarching point: there are a lot of different types of companies and organizations out there. Different sizes. Different industries. Different teams spread across different departments. How can one-size-fit-all recommendations work for your business? At best, they may offer either a starting point, or something to compare yourself against. If your current team structure doesnââ¬â¢t work, and it also looks nothing like whatââ¬â¢s considered standard, you know where to start diagnosing issues. But, what will always work best, is figuring out what your specific organization needs to succeed. The best marketing org structure is the one that's designed specifically for what your organization...How Did Grow Its Marketing Teams? When first started, Nathan Ellering (now Head of Demand Generation) was a one-person team. While CEO and co-founder Garrett Moon contributed content and guidance, all things marketing were owned by a single staffer. Talk about a high-pressure environment. The upside? Nathan had total creative control and free reign to test what worked (and what didnââ¬â¢t). Heââ¬â¢d learn a new tactic or get started with a new channel. Then, once he figured it out, another team member would be brought on board to take it over. Eventually, more teams were added to tackle new tasks, each strategically selected to support business growth for a fast-moving startup. Product Marketing promotes the product itself: While Branding and PR helps tell 's story to the world: Is it time to rethink your marketing org chart? See how @structures its marketing teams...How to Build Your Own Marketing Department The best marketing team layout is the one you build yourself. A structure thatââ¬â¢s tailored to your own needs is going to work better than rigidly sticking to the way things have always been done, or filling roles you think you need because theyââ¬â¢re what everyone else is doing. Start With Jobs to be Done Before thinking about specific roles, think about the work that needs to be completed. This doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean figuring out whatââ¬â¢s the next hot marketing trend and hiring to fill that gap. It means figuring out what makes the most sense for your business, and finding talent to fit your own needs. Thatââ¬â¢s what the team did when it started out. The results speak for themselves, and might not have been attained as easily had the company followed a traditional hiring pattern. In the early days (and even now) leaned heavily on inbound marketing, creating top-notch blog content to attract leads. The strategy was simple: Do basic keyword research. Create content answering those queries. Promote it via social media and email. Thatââ¬â¢s effective for bringing in an audience, and eventually converting that audience into a paid customer base. It then added product marketers to help sell the product once an audience had been built. Next, a PR team was built out to help manage key relationships, 10X the buzz around the product, and more. Recommended Reading: The Best Formula for 10X Marketing Growth is Here Research Your Industry Your competition got where they are somehow. Copying them isnââ¬â¢t necessarily a recipe for duplicating success. But, studying them might give you ideas on which roles you need to hire for. Start by searching names and job titles on LinkedIn. Enter a company of similar size to your own (or one you admire, or perhaps a competitor) into the search bar: Next, scroll through the results to find Job Titles: Then, build a spreadsheet mapping out roles you find and where they might logically fit: This can help you sketch out a loose idea of how a marketing department like yours might be structured. You might also reveal roles or opportunities you hadnââ¬â¢t considered before. Recommended Reading: The Marketing Research Process That Will Take Your Content to the Next Level Determine the Most Important Work That Will Make the Most Impact focuses on 10X marketing. This means prioritizing projects that deliver 10X improvements, rather than 10% improvements. Itââ¬â¢s allowed the company to grow immensely, and guides how decisions get made. Any marketer or team can follow a similar framework for determining which roles should be filled first. Hereââ¬â¢s a brief explanation of what its about from CEO Garrett Moon:Hereââ¬â¢s a visual rundown illustrating how this philosophy works in practice: This process is geared toward content marketing, but you can adapt the core concept to prioritizing marketing roles and activities across the board. The goal: figure out the channels, tactics, and strategies that will contribute to 10X business growth. Easier said than done, right? Prioritize Channels Here are some findings from a survey conducted by Get Response: Determine the Roles That Fit Each Channel Broadly speaking, which roles will own which tactics and channels? Some channels might touch multiple teams (for example, customer service, PR, and content might all use social media for different purposes). Determine the Tasks Each Role Should Be Responsible For You know what needs to be done. Now, who will own which tasks? This ties back into your Jobs to be Done. For each job or task, list the steps required to complete it. Hereââ¬â¢s an example of what this might look like for creating a blog post: Generate an idea. Do keyword research. Write an outline. Execute post based on outline. Design visual content. Editing and review. Schedule on editorial calendar. Measure performance. Each of these tasks could fall onto different team members: Ideation and writing execution might fall onto content marketing. Keyword research might too, if the organization doesnââ¬â¢t have a dedicated SEO specialist. A graphic designer would be best for creating stunning visual content. An editor or manager would need to review and schedule content. If a team has a dedicated analyst or analytics team, theyââ¬â¢d own measuring performance and extracting actionable insights from data. Beyond knowing what you need done, understand what it will take to complete the work effectively. Then, hire accordingly, and divide tasks between the team members best suited to handle each one. Do This With : Task Templates are reusable checklists you can build directly into your marketing management platform with . See how they work. Find the Best Talent Sports teams sometimes draft talent using whatââ¬â¢s called a ââ¬Å"best available playerâ⬠approach. This means that regardless of current talent gaps on their roster, theyââ¬â¢ll take the best overall players they can find. Then, theyââ¬â¢ll strategize on how to make the best use of those players. Itââ¬â¢s all about doubling down on strengths, and finding ways to mitigate weaknesses (if they canââ¬â¢t be eliminated completely). Businesses often do something similar, where theyââ¬â¢ll make room for talented team members, even if they werenââ¬â¢t initially hiring for their role. Where can you find these folks? Consider the following places: Networking Events: Are there any relevant professional groups or marketing meetups in your area? Conferences: Large marketing conferences like Inbound and Content Marketing World may be great places to find talent. Social Media: Reach out to your network for referrals. Someone you know might pass along your next great hire. Be sure to post about job opportunities on LinkedIn, or even consider doing some cold outreach to promising prospects you find. Looking to find the best talent in your area (or beyond)? Use these resources: Indeed Workable Jobvite Group Talent Into Logical Teams As you add staff and roles, you may find different people fit better on different teams. Now, hereââ¬â¢s the kicker: your org chart might not look exactly like anyone elseââ¬â¢s. Youââ¬â¢re not your competition. In fact, youââ¬â¢re not anyone but yourselves. So, why be beholden to copying a rigid structure, when you could custom tailor your own talent to your own needs? Take this as permission to put people where theyââ¬â¢re best suited to succeed, not where a chart says they have to be.

Working in Organisation Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Working in Organisation - Case Study Example As a result, Boyle placed Fred with Eric Brown. He was a seasoned foreman and experienced production supervisor who had been with the company since he "left school" at the age of sixteen. Eric and Fred began working together with Eric training him to become a supervisor, and Fred attempting to learn the company and ways in which he could effectively manage its employees. Moreover, as time progressed, and Eric and Fred worked more together, it became apparent, especially to Boyle, that the two employees did not work well together. In addition, Boyle knew that, if Eric and Fred were not working well together, they were not learning together either, and Fred was not learning to be an effective supervisor. Eric and Fred perceived each other to be ignorant, incompetent individuals who both lacked the intelligence and skill regarding the company's welfare. They were very disagreeable concerning the supervisory measures, and they did not favor the other's opinion. Eric was a seasoned employee in his mid-50s and, having been with the company since the age of sixteen, he had earned his current position of foreman, working his way up through the "ends and outs" of the company. Further, since Eric had left school at sixteen, he did not have a formal education. Nevertheless, he has the experience and respect of his employees. Therefore, Eric resented Fred for being able to be hired into the company with his college degree and little to no experience. Equally important, Fred was directly hired as a management trainee which meant that he would soon be promoted to a supervisory position. He didn't have to work his way up through the company as Eric had done. As a result, Eric did not believe that the company's generous treatment to Fred was fair and adequate, especially since he had to earn his position over time. Eric seems to be a fair, hard-working employee that is very competent and capable of performing his job to the best of his abilities.Still, Eric does not appreciate the company's generous treatment to Fred simply because he has a college degree. He does not want to believe that, someday, he could possibly be "booted out" of the company in which he has worked so hard simply because his ideas and work ethics are not up-to-date and not "based on some obscure piece of theory." On the other hand, Fred, similarly, perceives Eric as an aged, overworked employee who will not be accepting to an employee of the younger generation. He believes that Eric does not trust him to perform well and supervise other employees while on the job.Since Fred does have a college degree, it is possible that he perceives himself to be better than Eric on some level, particularly regarding knowledge. According to Dan Hupp, president of the Pittsburgh Human Resource Planning Society and owner of his own consulting firm, one of the main issues encountered within the present workforce is the "generational issue," as stated in "Younger bosses older employees vs. younger bosses vs. older employees" by Johnna A. Pro.Hupp believes that it's important for the younger generation to realize the importance of the older employees. He states that, "[The older employees] have an

Analysis - I have written my article about cloning Essay Example for Free
Analysis I have written my article about cloning Essay I have written my article about cloning. The opinions I have used in it are a highly exaggerated depiction of extremist views. I have shown, how ridiculous and outrageous these views are by overstressing every point and going to immense extremities, such as the master race and the worker race, these are so severe that the worker race would even be kept underground. I used pictures in my writing to make it easier for people to visualize the images that I am talking about because then they will be able to understand my ideas better. I have inserted a picture of Britney Spears, as she is a well-known, famous star, that many people like, or would like to be. The reason that I have included this particular image is because many people long to live like these stars and by using the image I am implying that if we introduce cloning and the so- called master race then everyone will be able to live like this. Many people believe that she is a perfect human being and this is the idea that I am trying to convey with the master race, that after using the system for a couple of decades, what will be left will be a, supposedly, perfect human race, which for many people the picture used illustrates perfectly. If I had room for more pictures on the page I would have used a picture of another stereotypical perfect male star to appeal to both sexes, but I wanted the article to look professional so I tried to keep the number of pictures too minimum. The picture will also encourage people to read the article because if they have turned over the page and they then see the picture of Britney. If they are an admirer, then they will most probably turn back to the start of the article to read it the whole way through. The reason that the picture has been repeated three times is because it shows what could be achieved by cloning, not just one, allegedly, flawless human being but as many as wanted, a whole race of them even. The repetition shows the main process of cloning as well, making an identical copy of something/ someone. I also use pictures of Morlocks from the film of the book The Time Machine by H. G Wells. The book and the films are set far into the future, this is also a little indication of the fact that this is could really happen in the future. These creatures were humans but as time has passed they started to live underground as they were using all of the earths resources, that is the main reason that I am using this picture to show what the, as I have called them in my article, worker race, would be like as my extreme plan is to have them working day and night, underground to provide the master race with everything they need. The reason that I have used such a ghastly picture is because I want it shock the reader, it will also draw attention to the article. The workers wont be good-looking, as they will never of had sunlight on their skin and never of had any of the beauty products and treatments we take for granted so the picture is an accurate representation of what they would actually look like. The contrast between the purportedly picture perfect Britney and the hideous, unsightly Morlock should make people start to think that they would much rather be with the master race rather than the workers. There is also the idea that this is what the human race has become as it has evolved and that cloning could save us from this atrocious fate and instead bring us to the attractive future that the master race offers. Two of the pictures are in black and white, these are the pictures of the worker race, these are in black and white to give a feel of darkness to the pictures and to imply that this is the sort of life they would have, never seeing any colour, whereas the picture of the master race is brightly coloured and shows an image that people feel drawn to look at unlike the pictures of the Morlocks and the ants. This means that the contrast is even more noticeable between the two sets of pictures. I have used the layout of having the pictures cutting into the writing, so that you cant help looking at the pictures while you are reading, helping the readers to picture the ideas I am putting into their heads, I have also put captions underneath the pictures to show what the pictures are of and how they relate to the topic of the article. The pictures are large and stand out from the page causing them to catch the readers eye whilst they are flicking through the paper, meaning that they read the article. I have used a strong title, Hitler Was Right, to fascinate the reader even before they have started reading the article. Including a strong political figure compels people to read the article as it looks like it could be an article of great importance. They will straight away wonder what the article could be about, causing suspense that will keep them reading until the very end of the article when they will realize that I was simply, apparently, agreeing with one very simple part of Hitlers range of ideas, that the world would be a better place if just one master race was to occupy it. This title has been written in Times New Roman and is in font size 36, I have done this so that the title stands out from all of the other things on the page. People wont be able to help noticing the title and this will generate interest in the article. The main body of the writing is in a quite large text; this is because I want it to stand out and not to be too small. The effect of this is that the article will not look as much of a difficult task to read, encouraging more people to read it. The prologue to the article is written in bold writing slightly bigger than in the main body of the text, this is so that this will stand out just a little bit more and people will read it before they read the main article. The writing in this prologue is encouraging people to read the main article. By ending it with a question the question is: why not? It makes people read on, as they want to find out the answer to this question, Straight away, in this first prologue I have shown my opinion, that I agree with cloning and all of the brilliant ideas that come along with it, this means that people will be under no disillusion while they are reading the article.

Recycling Essay -- Recycle Garbage Rubbish Papers
Recycling During the early 1970s, as communities across the United States saw their landfills filling up, attention turned to alternative methods of garbage disposal, such as incineration and recycling. While incineration proved to be a thorny issue due to its toxic ash byproduct, recycling was embraced by Americans as an effective way to offset rising garbage production rates. Today, demand for recycled products is beginning to match supply, and the percentage of waste going into landfills and incinerators is decreasing steadily. In 1970, when Americans produced 121 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW), three-quarters went directly into landfills, one-fifth was incinerated, and less than one-sixteenth was recycled. Now, with nearly double the MSW (more than 210 million tons per year), recycling accounts for almost one-quarter and incineration for a little over one-sixth. Indeed, widespread application of recycling throughout American communities has proven to be one of the great environmental success stories of the last quarter century. Accordingly, the trend toward fewer landfills continues. In 1988, for example, 8,000 landfills were scattered across the US; today little more than 3,000 remain. Meanwhile, nearly fifty percent of all Americans now have access to curbside recycling programs, while others, mostly in rural areas, can drop recyclables off at one of the nation's 2,600 transfer stations for recovery and diversion. And an increasing number of commercial and industrial operations are finding that recycling as much of their waste as possible saves hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on waste hauling and l... ...ls. At this time, a plastic recycling only minimally reduces the amount of virgin resources used to make plastics. Recycling papers, glass and metal, materials that are easily recycled more than once, saves far more energy and resources than are saved with plastics recycling. Consider this example: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bottles are hard to tell apart from PET bottles, but one stray PVC bottle in a melt of 10,000 PET bottles can ruin the entire batch. It's understandable why purchasers of recycled plastics want to make sure that the plastic is sorted properly. Equipment to sort plastics is being developed, but currently most recyclers are still sorting plastics by hand. That's expensive and time consuming. Plastics also are bulky and cumbersome to collect. In short, they take up a lot of space in recycling trucks.

Poem Explication I carry your heart I carry it my Essay
Explication of EE Cummings ââ¬Å"[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in]â⬠To better understand this very romantic poem, ââ¬Å"[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in], we must first understand that Edward Estlin Cummings was an avant-garde, which can be defined as an intelligentsia that develops new or experimental concepts especially in the arts (Merriam-Webster). Punctuation and lowercase type are used in a way thatââ¬â¢s visually appealing, while also highlighting the poemââ¬â¢s theme of unity. Cummings used this type of writing in many of his works. The poem ââ¬Å"[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in]â⬠by EE Cummings is a free verse poem about an undying love that is felt from within. The speaker can be a man or a woman. In this case the speaker is a man who has a deep eternal love for his lover; a she in this case. Cummings uses figurative language, linguistic paradoxes, and symbolism in this poem that makes the reader feel that undying love and unity from one lover to another. Cummings uses figurative language, denotations and connotations throughout this poem. The reader can first see this in the title, ââ¬Å"i carry your heart with meâ⬠. Obviously he isnââ¬â¢t actually carrying his loversââ¬â¢ heart in the literal sense. Instead the reader can understand that figuratively her presence and her love are always near. He feels it all the time. Itââ¬â¢s within him, ââ¬Å"i carry it in my heart.â⬠Cummings intertwined the denotations and connotations in his poem. He does this by the use of parenthesis throughout the poem. ââ¬Å"i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart) i am never without it (anywhere i go you goâ⬠¦..â⬠. Linguistic paradoxes are used as well throughout this poem. The speaker says one thing in one line only to contradict what he is saying in the next. For example: ââ¬Å"(â⬠¦.whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling) ââ¬Å"Itâ⬠is done by ââ¬Å"only himâ⬠but it is her ââ¬Å"doingâ⬠. The speaker makes the words work for him, although being contradictory. What is important in understanding this poem is understanding the symbolism of it. The speaker is symbolizing the love he feels for his lover by first saying he ââ¬Å"carries your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) or ââ¬Å"I fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet)â⬠All these quotes are symbols of his love. He feels love to the bottom of his soul. He uses the ââ¬Å"root of the rootâ⬠and ââ¬Å"bud of the budâ⬠and the ââ¬Å"sky of the skyâ⬠ââ¬Å"of a tree called life; which grows higher that soul can hope or mind can hideâ⬠to describe to the reader that his love continues to growà just as the tree of life continues to grow. This poem is obviously about love. An undying, deep love for the speakersââ¬â¢ lover. EE Cummings uses figurative language, linguistic paradoxes and symbolism to get the reader to actually feel the deep love that is shared between these lovers. It is ââ¬Å"the deepest secret nobody knows (the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder thatââ¬â¢s keeping the stars apartâ⬠. ââ¬Å"i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)â⬠Works Cited Cummings, EE. ââ¬Å"Poetry: 1952 Issue. ââ¬Å"[i carry your heart with me (i carry it in].â⬠1952,. www.poetryfoundation.org.
